During the Napoleonic Wars Prussia asked its citizens to donate their gold jewellery to help fund the resistance against Napoleon - in exchange they were given black iron jewellery. Coalstore copies this for the climate crisis movement producing jewellery out of the the valuable material coal and trapping the carbon into each piece.
The project explores a hopeful near future where coal is no longer burnt and is instead treasured as a material for it’s miraculous properties. Coal is globally responsible for 44 per cent of the world’s total carbon dioxide emissions and unless we leave remaining global reserves in the ground, or don’t burn them, the climate will warm to ever more dangerous levels.
